Prostate issues—such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, or prostate cancer—often develop gradually and may not show symptoms early on. However, there are five common warning signs that men should not ignore:
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
This includes needing to go often during the day or night (nocturia), especially if it disrupts sleep or daily activities. - Difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow
You may experience a weak stream, straining to urinate, or a feeling that the bladder isn’t fully empty after urination. - Pain or burning during urination or ejaculation
This can signal infection (like prostatitis) or inflammation and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. - Blood in urine or semen
While not always cancer-related, hematuria (blood in urine) or blood in semen warrants prompt medical attention. - Persistent pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis
In advanced cases—particularly with prostate cancer—this pain may result from the cancer spreading to bones or nearby tissues.
It’s important to note that many prostate conditions are treatable, especially when detected early. Men over 50—or over 45 with a family history or who are Black—should discuss prostate screening (like the PSA test) with their doctor.
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional. Early evaluation leads to better outcomes and peace of mind.
