How to know if an exam is proctored on Canvas?

You can tell if an exam is proctored on Canvas by checking for a few specific signs. First, look at the exam instructions provided by your instructor. If the exam requires a LockDown Browser, Proctorio, Honorlock, or any other proctoring tool, this will be clearly mentioned. Canvas itself doesn’t automatically proctor tests, so proctoring is only active if your course has integrated such software.

When you click on the exam, a proctored test will usually ask you to install or launch additional software before you can begin. For example, Respondus LockDown Browser will prevent you from using other applications, while Proctorio may ask for access to your webcam, microphone, and screen. If you are prompted to do a room scan, show an ID, or enable video/audio, that confirms the exam is proctored.

Another way to know is through Canvas settings. If the exam only allows one attempt, has strict time limits, and prevents you from moving back to previous questions, these are often combined with proctoring requirements. Instructors may also restrict navigation or disable copy-paste functions during proctored tests.

If the exam opens directly in Canvas without asking for extra tools or permissions, it is usually not proctored. You will be able to move through questions normally, and no monitoring will take place.

When in doubt, always ask your instructor or check your course announcements, since schools are required to inform students if monitoring software will be used. By checking the exam launch process, required software, and instructions, you can quickly confirm whether your Canvas exam is proctored.
