What is Moodle Proctoring, and how does it affect the security and fairness of my online exams?

Moodle proctoring refers to the use of specialized software or plugins integrated within the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) to supervise students and maintain the academic integrity of online examinations. Since Moodle itself does not include advanced proctoring tools, institutions that use it for high-stakes tests, such as those leading to professional certification or licensure, rely on third-party solutions like Respondus Monitor, ProctorU, or dedicated Moodle plugins. These tools ensure that every student takes the exam under the same fair and controlled conditions.

How the Proctoring Process Works:

Proctoring methods vary, but they generally fall into three types: Live, Automated, and Recorded. For a student, the process typically starts with a mandatory system check. The software verifies your identity (often by having you show a photo ID to the webcam) and performs an environment scan to check your room. Throughout the exam, the proctoring software actively monitors you using several key features:

  • Browser Lockdown: This feature, often handled by a secure browser application, locks down your computer, preventing you from opening new tabs, accessing other applications, copy/pasting, or using unauthorized search engines. Any attempt to switch tabs or minimize the exam window is flagged as a violation.
  • Webcam and Audio Monitoring: The webcam continuously records you, or takes timed photos, to ensure it is the registered student taking the test. Advanced AI tools analyze your head and eye movements to detect suspicious behavior, such as looking away repeatedly, reading from hidden notes, or receiving outside assistance.
  • Screen Recording: The software records your entire desktop screen to confirm that you are only accessing authorized exam content.
